Hundreds of well=wishers, friends and members of the various African and African centred spiritualities in Republic Trinidad & Tobago attended the burial rites of Mother Monica Baker. For several nights members of the Spiritual Baptist/Shouter community and members of the orisa/Ifa community joined with family members in conducting and participating in rites of transition for Mother Monica.

Yesterday, her body was ushered on it’s journey of becoming an Ancestor.

Many persons from in and out of Republic Trinidad & Tobago were in attendance.

Drums, bell ringing, hand clapping singing and chanting was all part of the joyous send off.

Members of the Rapso community, Calypso community and folk cultural traditional community were in attendance.

While some groups did not seem to have official representation there were persons from Nationally recognised bodies in attendance.

Members of Egbe Onisin Eledumare were present and Balogun of Egbe Onisin Eledumare,Oloye Orawale Oranfe Ife on the invitation of the family offerd adura/se orisa.Oloye Orawale Oranfe also spoke briefly in his capacity as Otunba Atoodimu of Isese Agbaye World wide Community and delivered greetings on behalf of Kabiyesi! Oba Isese Agbaye Erinsinba 1 – Oba Adekoya.

The attendees were of all ages old and young, and this augurs well for the continuation of African spirituality in Republic Trinidad & Tobago.

It was a proud moment to see and feel the love that was shared by and from members of the Laventille community where so much that is highlighted as coming out of this community is gang and gun violence. No one seemed threatened, nor was anyone afraid to sojourn in the community. The author of this article experienced and observed respect from the community being accorded to attendees of the burial rites in their community.

Finally before her departure Bishop Dedan Nottingham, and Micheal Osouna officiated in Spiritual Baptist and Orisa administrations and the body was led accompanied by appropiate departure chants to be transported into the heavenly realm.

May all who are duty bound to continue performance of traditional rites on her behalf fulfill their obligations and may the spirit and essence of Mother Monica Baker be elevated.
