Another year has rolled by.
Africans worldwide still continue to struggle for significant improvement in out lives.
Interference by external forces and by internal counterproductive forces continue to plague our struggles.
Wheresoever we are we are constantly engaged in battle.
Is there hope?
There is hope.
As we engage yet another year of U.N. designated International Decade for People of African Descent there seems to be little State response to ensure that Africans in this country have “national cooperation in relation to the full enjoyment of economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights by people of African descent, and their full and equal participation in all aspects of society.”
The result and consequence of this has been increased crime and violence in our communities as the dispossessed and disadvantaged citizens of African descent seek to rectify this situation.
Even where citizens utilise legal options such as trade union action to receive their well earned benefits to wealth that they helped to create, the State and its relevant agencies have frustrated these legitimate efforts in favor of big business,State and foreign enterprises.
As a direct consequence of this oppression is on the rise.
In our region there are attempts by capitalist/imperialist interests to plunge the region into political instability and internecine war and dispute.
How can we counter these divisive and disruptive tactics of those who do not wish to see us prosper and enjoy the benefits of our contributions to our societies and world at large.
WE MUST FIGHT BACK.
WE MUST ORGANIZE TOTALLY AND EFFECTIVELY.
WE MUST SUPPORT OUR OWN.
WE MUST ESTABLISH OUR OWN INSTITUTIONS OF REVOLUTIONARY EDUCATION AIMED AT FREEDOM OF OUR MINDS,BODIES, SOULS AND SPIRITS.
WE MUST RETURN TO OUR ANCIENT WELL TRIED INSTITUTIONS AND PRACTICES OF COOPERATIVE AND COLLABORATIVE ECONOMICS WITHIN OUR COMMUNITIES.
WE MUST JOIN AND FINANCIALLY SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS THAT ALREADY EXIST TO SERVE OUR NEEDS.
WE MUST BUILD NEW ORGANIZATIONS THAT WILL COMPLIMENT THOSE ALREADY WORKING SO THAT WE MAY MORE QUICKLY ACHIEVE OUR OBJECTIVE.
WE MUST ORGANIZE AND STAY ORGANIZE.
WE MUST DEFEND OUR RIGHT TOBE FREE.
There are perhaps several other legitimate actions that can and should be taken.
It is time that we stop complaining and start doing something.Where we are disorganized or not organized WE SHOULD ORGANIZE.
As we enter another year in which our government should begin to ENSURE that persons of African Descent are equally given opportunities of building independent institutions via State funds, we should all demand that this happens.
Any political party existing or not yet existing to receive our support should meet our demands.
As we celebrate let us honour our Ancestors.
As we celebrate let us keep the image of FREEDOM-Total and unconditional in our minds.
When we gather this time next year let us report to ourselves our accomplishments of this year’s objectives.
I pray that all of us celebrating this year will do so with peace, with dignity and with the royal comportment with which our Ancestors carried ourselves.
I pray that there shall be no violence whatsoever manifested on our sacred day of coming together in UNITY.
May there be no deaths, interruptions of our celebrations or anything untoward whatsoever as we celebrate.
I thank our Ancestors.I thank the Ancestors of the First Nations Peoples.
In conclusion I greet the entire Nation of Republic Trinidad and Tobago: Let every creed and Race have its equal place.
